Today we went to the Longmont Humane Society fundraiser. My neighbor is on the board and I was asked to take some pictures of the event. I *almost* want a dog. There were some really cute dogs, but I think they look cuter through a camera lens.
*Michael took this picture. If I had to pick a dog I would bring home, it would have been this one.

There are times when I "almost" want a dog. Fortunately these episodes are brief and I soon regain my sanity.
We have had many dogs (and animals- the stories i could tell!)over the years and really enjoyed them. Sure they're extra work, but what they have to teach kids ( unselfish service, affection given and gratefully received, companionship) and what they have to give far outweighs the little troubles. George, for instance, is pretty obedient and happy to hang out with me and go for walks even when my kids aren't. He even helps with my diet ever so slightly by looking very disapproving when I am eating ( all Scnauzers look rather like small Scottish Presbyterian ministers of the less tolerant sort).I am sooo pro-dog ( not so much with cats(for me- Sherri)- they can get on the counters and are ungrateful)and can recommend them highly (very cute Beagle BTW, very cute!).My only injunction is choose the breed wisely! Smaller dogs for smaller kids are not bad choices if they are kid likers. Yappy dogs are not my cuppa and I've known a few Pomeranians that should be used strictly for golf practice! I've never regretted the dogs we've had when I check it against all the benefits.
I have always felt exactly the same way you do, and have always thought when the kids were older we'ed get one. Then we saw 'Marley & Me' this weekend. I think we will continue to enjoy everyone else's dogs.
